GROW IT FORWARD

GROW IT FORWARD, a Non-Profit, School-Centred, Community-Based Partnership is about "teaching through gardening" with two main objectives:

Ontario Curriculum component delivery through the concept of "gardening". With the aid of prepared resources and experienced leadership, teachers will find it easy to engage students with something they can associate with. Students benefit from improved academic achievement and satisfaction. The program makes use of experiential and inquiry based learning. It addresses different modalities and allows students to make 'real connections' through hands-on discovery.

Promoting Awareness and Action in response to environmental change. Starting at the community level, the goal of Grow It Forward is to produce citizen-stewards of healthy ecological and social systems. By educating and mobilizing its members to think "globally, act locally", this collaborative garden reclamation project blossoms, becoming a focal point of the community.

our story

Grow It Forward is a unique garden-based learning enterprise that differs from others in its scope of learning, community involvement and revenue generating potential.

Ken Steinberg, a former science teacher, outdoor educator and Montessori director, founded the program in 2012. Drawing on his experience as an education program developer, landscaper and environmental steward, Ken set out to create an innovative, experiential learning program that would engage, educate and energize entire communities.

Beond the obvious benefits of beautiful flowers, baskets of veggies and the satisfaction of getting outdoors, this program provides us with a much-needed time-out from technology and addresses a wide range of individual learning requirements. After all, wouldn't you agree that learning through nature is only natural?

four pillars

At its roots, Grow It Forward has 4 primary objectives:

Academic Achievement

Enhance curriculum delivery and outcomes by energizing teachers and learners through experiential learning activities. Create essential 'real-world', extra-curriculuar learning experiences.

Eco-Literacy & Stewardship

Develop an understanding of the opportunities, challenges and responsibilities that are associated with our interactions with the environment. Promote awareness, appreciation and action among community members.

Community & Social Development

Develop individual accountability and interpersonal relationships through collaborative work and community interactions.

Healthy Lifestyle

Understand that health relates to our body, mind and state of being. Establish a connection between food and environment. Recognize how we can regulate our health by adjusting our activity levels and the foods we eat.
